CASE FILE #936

BEAST OF BRAY ROAD

Wisconsin's werewolf, first reported along one quiet rural road.

🛸🛸🛸🛸🛸TINFOIL RATING: 3/5

The Claim

Since at least the 1930s, with a major resurgence of reports in 1991, residents near Elkhorn, Wisconsin have described a large, bipedal, wolf-or-dog-like creature crossing roads and fields, most famously along the road that gave the legend its name.

The Evidence

  • A 1991 newspaper investigation that collected multiple independent local reports.
  • Consistent physical descriptions: upright posture, canine features, grayish-brown fur.
  • A history of livestock disturbances in the area coinciding with sighting spikes.

The Official Story

Wildlife biologists point to a well-documented, if uncommon, condition: canines (coyotes, wolves, or dogs) with severe mange or spinal injuries can adopt unusual gaits, sometimes appearing to walk semi-upright, especially briefly when startled. Combined with nighttime visibility and the area's healthy coyote population, most researchers see no need to invoke anything supernatural.

File Notes

The case put Elkhorn, Wisconsin on the cryptid map largely thanks to journalist Linda Godfrey, who turned her original newspaper investigation into a whole series of books on American “dogman” sightings.
