CASE FILE #991

CROP CIRCLES

Intricate patterns pressed into wheat fields overnight, mostly across the English countryside.

🛸🛸🛸🛸🛸TINFOIL RATING: 3/5

The Claim

Since the 1970s, intricate geometric patterns have appeared, seemingly overnight, flattened into wheat and barley fields, mostly in southern England. Some believers attribute them to UFOs, earth energy fields, or other unexplained forces, citing their precision and the lack of visible footprints leading into some formations.

The Evidence

  • The sheer geometric complexity of many formations, some spanning hundreds of feet.
  • Reports of unusual soil and plant-node changes at some crop circle sites.
  • The circles' apparent overnight appearance, with no witnesses ever catching one forming.

The Official Story

In 1991, English pensioners Doug Bower and Dave Chorley publicly demonstrated how they'd created crop circles for over a decade using nothing but wooden planks, rope, and a cap-mounted wire loop for sighting straight lines, sparking a wave of copycat “circlemakers” who've continued creating increasingly elaborate formations ever since as a genuine art form.

File Notes

Modern crop circle artists now form actual collectives and openly sell their services and expertise, treating it as land art rather than mystery — which some purists find far less exciting than the original conspiracy.
