The Claim
In the 1990s, video footage began circulating showing fast-moving, elongated, wing-like shapes darting across the frame, dubbed “rods” or “skyfish” by believer and filmmaker Jose Escamilla, who argued they were previously undiscovered flying creatures, invisible to the naked eye but detectable on video.
The Evidence
- Numerous video clips from unrelated cameras worldwide showing visually similar streaking shapes.
- The creatures' consistent wavy, wing-like appearance across many separate recordings.
- Their apparent total invisibility to the naked eye, only appearing after filming.
The Official Story
Photography experts have thoroughly demonstrated that “rods” are simply ordinary flying insects or birds, captured mid-wingbeat by a camera's shutter and frame rate, which blurs the fast-moving wings into a smooth, solid-looking, elongated shape the human eye would never perceive that way in real time. Recreating the effect with common houseflies and a standard video camera is trivially easy and has been done repeatedly on camera.
File Notes
This is a genuinely useful case file for understanding how misleading recorded evidence can be even when nobody's lying — the cameras really did capture something real, just not what it looked like.
