The Claim
Since at least the 1980s, mysterious tile-like messages have appeared embedded in asphalt streets in cities across the U.S. and South America, most reading some variation of “TOYNBEE IDEA — IN MOViE `2001` — RESURRECT DEAD — ON PLANET JUPITER,” referencing historian Arnold Toynbee and the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The Evidence
- Hundreds of documented tiles found embedded in road surfaces across multiple countries.
- A consistent, distinctive layered-linoleum construction technique across most confirmed tiles.
- A 2011 documentary, Resurrect Dead, that traced leads but never conclusively identified the maker.
The Official Story
The documentary Resurrect Dead identified a strong leading suspect — a reclusive Philadelphia man named Severino “Champ” Verna — based on circumstantial evidence including matching materials and a relative's account, but Verna himself never confirmed it before his death, and no tile has ever been installed while anyone was watching. The installation method itself, which appears to involve embedding the material and letting traffic press it into the asphalt over time, remains only partially understood.
File Notes
New tiles occasionally still turn up even decades after the presumed original maker's suspected death, which has kept a small, dedicated community of “toynbee tile hunters” actively cataloguing sightings online.
