The Claim
In 1955, a Loveland, Ohio businessman reported seeing three four-foot-tall frog-like creatures on the side of the road. The legend resurfaced in 1972 when a local police officer reported shooting at a similar creature he described as reptilian, upright, and possibly holding a wand that sparked.
The Evidence
- Two separate reported sightings, 17 years apart, from different witnesses.
- One report came directly from an on-duty police officer, adding institutional credibility.
- Consistent description of an upright, frog-faced creature across both incidents.
The Official Story
The 1972 officer later admitted the creature he shot at was very likely an escaped iguana or large lizard, made to look strange by darkness and the glare of his headlights; a wildlife-crossing sign or reflective object may explain the “sparkler.” No physical evidence — body, print, or otherwise — has ever been recovered from either incident.
File Notes
Loveland has leaned into it: the frog now appears on local merchandise, and the town holds a good-natured place in Ohio's unofficial cryptid hall of fame alongside the Mothman up the road in West Virginia.
