CASE FILE #969

PAUL IS DEAD

Rumor has it a Beatle died in 1966 and was secretly replaced.

🛸🛸🛸🛸🛸TINFOIL RATING: 4/5

The Claim

The “Paul is Dead” rumor holds that Beatles member Paul McCartney died in a car crash in 1966 and was secretly replaced by a look-alike, with the band supposedly hiding hints of the truth in album art and backmasked lyrics for fans sharp enough to notice.

The Evidence

  • The Abbey Road album cover, read by fans as a funeral procession, with McCartney barefoot and out of step.
  • Alleged backward messages on several tracks, including a famous moment on “Strawberry Fields Forever.”
  • Minor, genuine changes in McCartney's appearance and singing style across the band's career.

The Official Story

Paul McCartney is, very publicly, alive: he has released dozens of albums, headlined Glastonbury, and continued touring stadiums well into his 80s. The Beatles themselves found the rumor funny enough that McCartney later poked fun at it directly, titling a 1993 live album Paul Is Live, with cover art parodying the original Abbey Road photo.

File Notes

This is one of the most thoroughly, publicly, repeatedly disproven conspiracy theories ever created — and also one of the most fun, since “disproving” it just means watching Paul McCartney keep touring.
