The Claim
Over several nights in late December 1980, U.S. Air Force personnel stationed at RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk, England reported strange lights in nearby Rendlesham Forest, with some describing a metallic, triangular craft on the ground and unusual radiation readings at the site afterward.
The Evidence
- An official memo written by deputy base commander Lt. Col. Charles Halt describing the events in real time.
- Multiple independent servicemen's statements taken shortly after the incident.
- Reported radiation readings above background level at the alleged landing site.
The Official Story
The UK Ministry of Defence investigated and concluded there was no threat to national security, the standard bar for military inquiries, without ruling on what was actually seen. Skeptical researchers point to a rotating beam from the nearby Orfordness Lighthouse, visible through the trees, along with a genuine bright meteor fireball reported over England that same week, as likely sources for the lights.
File Notes
Unlike most UFO cases, this one comes with an actual named, ranking military officer's contemporaneous written account, which is a big part of why it's remained one of the most credible-seeming UFO cases in British history.
