CASE FILE #912

THE YETI

The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas.

🛸🛸🛸🛸🛸TINFOIL RATING: 3/5

The Claim

The Yeti is said to be a large, ape-like creature living in the high snowfields of the Himalayas, leaving oversized footprints and occasionally being glimpsed by climbers and Sherpa guides. Western fascination exploded after 1951, when mountaineer Eric Shipton photographed a mysterious footprint trail on Mount Everest.

The Evidence

  • Shipton's 1951 footprint photographs, still among the most famous cryptid images ever taken.
  • Local Sherpa oral traditions describing a mountain-dwelling wild man predating Western contact.
  • Alleged Yeti “scalps” kept as relics in several Himalayan monasteries.

The Official Story

A 2017 genetic study analyzing hair, teeth, and skin samples collected from alleged Yeti remains, including monastery relics, found every single sample matched known bears — mostly Himalayan brown bears and Tibetan blue bears. Researchers now believe most sightings are bears walking on their hind legs, whose tracks can widen and blur into giant, human-like prints as snow melts and refreezes around the edges.

File Notes

Even Tenzing Norgay, the Sherpa who co-completed the first confirmed Everest summit in 1953, said he believed in the Yeti — while also noting he'd never actually seen one himself.
